LA MISMA: Demo cassette (Toxic State -2013)
The first Monday in May and it’s as gray as the week is long, what’s with this northeast chill? The cassette cover for LA MISMA is monochromatic too, so naturally, we went with that. We’ve actually been enjoying LA MISMA (btw, that’s Portuguese for "Girls invented punk rock, not England") since last week and shouldn’t relegate their status here at You’re Commuting All Over Me to overcast times. Let’s keep it positive, okay!
LA MISMA offer up six rudimentary blasts of what some reviewers call hardcore, but these six burns rattle with enough shangri-la shake to elicit comparisons to Angelino fire starters like the Bags or loose Oz rioters Rocks, and that ain’t hardcore. That’s good. Yea, some big cartelers reference hardcore street ganks when serving up this LA MISMA tape. Ew. But before we get shanked by the more concrete minded reactionaries in this scene, let us take some time to elucidate our lines of fracture. The staff here at You’re Commuting All Over Me like our hardcore with some flange, you know, good and weird, in contrast to the uniformed polka beat of the Oi/MRR lineage. Fuck that stuff. We’ve always perceived a discreet inability amongst the dedicated MRR h/c minions to tolerate ambiguity and paradox - musical and otherwise - which may be why so much of it lacks personality.
Oi! We mean, oy…we intended to keep this positive! This is the Van Wyck Expressway, not Boston or L.A., so let’s lighten up already. We’re certainly no experts, but there seem to be oodles of weird and juicy core/ee\ographers dancing on the ceiling these past few years, from Wiccans and Iron Lung to Fucking Dyke Bitches (that’s f.d.b. to you pal) and Crazy Spirit to Gay Kiss and HPP and Kim Phuc and Naw Dude and Shoppers and the self starters at Toxic State and Katorga Works, and now there’s LA MISMA. Sure we discern some Negazione surf curls buried in the riffage, but we also hear LA MISMA looking to break out the crude flying fuckin’ a-head guitar solos on “Fado” and they’re pretty effective at tarting it up all around. We say go for it. LA MISMA = great. Don’t forget to check out their newest burn on the NY’s Alright Ground Zero 2013 comp too - it rips!
